YouTube is the second most visited website in the world, and offers creative individuals the opportunity to earn money from making videos. This workshop will explore how this can work in practice, and what it takes to become a professional YouTube Creator. Topics covered will include an overview of the rapidly-evolving YouTube Partner Programme, multi-channel networks (MCNs), content optimization, understanding what material is suitable for advertising, affiliate links, Patreon, and working with brands/sponsors and broadcasters. There will also be some discussion of other income-generating video platforms, and a guide to further sources of information.
The workshop is run by Christopher Barnatt, a freelance film maker and lecturer whose ExplainingComputers and ExplainingTheFuture YouTube channels have received over 35 million video views. Christopher’s ExplainingComputers channel also has over 260,000 subscribers. This workshop therefore allows you to learn from somebody who earns the majority of their living making YouTube content, and to ask them questions.
This workshop is for creative individuals with an interest in developing a YouTube channel as part of their business or future career. If you are looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, then this is not for you. But if you want to understand how it is possible, over time, to turn a YouTube channel into a successful commercial activity, then you will find the content highly relevant. You may also find the workshop useful if you work in marketing and promotion and want to know how best to engage with YouTube ‘influencers’.
