Releasing Music & the Media with Sarah Lay & Pete Darrington

Sarah is a long standing music journalist while Pete has been a broadcaster and former bass player of indie legends Cable. The two came together to form Reckless Yes records. In this workshop we will be discussing approaching labels, forming your own label, other ways of releasing your music and how to get noticed by the music press. Sarah and Pete will also engage in a panel discussion and question and answer session.

Sarah Lay & Peter Darrington

Founded in 2016 Reckless Yes is an independent record label based in Derby, also offering artist management, live promotion, and book publishing. With a fiercely DIY ethic and a preference for vinyl releases the roster currently includes LIINES, Pet Crow, Grawl!x, Unqualified Nurse Band, Mower, and Dactylion. Records by their artists are distributed online and to independent record shops, and have gained praise from the likes of John Kennedy (Radio X), Amazing Radio, 6Music, BBC Introducing, Record Collector, Team Rock, Unsigned Guide, Louder Than War magazine, Loud & Quiet, The 405, God Is In The TV, Unsigned Guide and more. The label was founded and is run by Peter Darrington and Sarah Lay.

Pete is a broadcaster, music journalist, writer, DJ and musician. He was the bassist in Cable, who released three albums of angular noise-rock via Infectious in the 1990s and influenced the math and alt rock scene of today. With more than 20 years experience as a professional musician he is skilled in writing, recording, and touring as well as navigating the music industry. As a music journalist he has written for Team Rock, Drowned in Sound and Louder Than War.

Sarah is a music journalist and editor, broadcaster, author, and digital specialist. Editor of Louder Than War for five years she supported it toward a move into print, and currently writes for LTW magazine, Loud & Quiet, Get In Her Ears, Echoes and Dust, and God Is In The TV, as well as running Derby’s independent music publication Storge. She has previously run her own music PR agency, is a specialist in digital strategy and communications, and with 20 years experience of working in and around music is adept at promotion, sales and artist identity.

Write:Record:Release is a step by step guide for the musician explaining the processes of songwriting, composition, vocals & performance, recording & production, mastering, releasing and publishing, and the music business. Industry professionals will demystify each stage, adding valuable tips from their own wealth of knowledge giving each musician the necessary tools to improve their craft and further their career. These will take the form of a dedicated one hour workshop followed by an hour panel discussion and Q&A session with the group.
