Title: Exploring creative approaches to writing - part 1
Details: This workshop is the first of two designed for beginner and intermediate writers wishing to enhance their creative writing skills. Participants will be encouraged to explore found poetry and write a poem using this approach. Participants will also be encouraged to work together with fellow students and share their ideas and views and give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. Participants may also be asked to undertake work to support the workshop outside of the session.
Outcome: Participants will write a found poem.
About workshop leader Panya Banjoko
Panya Banjoko is a UK based Writer and Poet whose work has been published in various anthologies. She has performed widely, including the 2012 Olympic Games, coordinates a Black Writers network and is Patron for Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature.
Her first published poem was Brain Drain published by Penguin Press in IC3: New Black Writing in Britain (2000). She has had poems published in numerous anthologies including, Out of Bounds by Bloodaxe Books. Her poem, One Of A Kind, was long listed by Peepal Tree Press in 2016 and commended in the Writers East Midlands Aurora Poetry Competition in 2017.
Whilst poetry is her mainstay she has also written two early years publications, The Princess and the Potter’s Pot, a commission for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Museum Service in 2008 and Hari at the Castle, for Nottingham Castle Museum (2010).
In 2008 she was awarded Women in the Arts for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry. And in 2016 voted C-Hub magazine’s best Performer 2016 and in the same year selected by Left Lion Magazine as one of Nottingham's most influential Black Women. In 2017 she was presented with the Black Achievers Award in Culture, Music and Art for her work with Poetry. Her debut poetry collection will be published by Burning Eye Books in June 2018.
